San vito dei Normanni

Starting from Ostuni and going to Brindis through the towns of Carovigno, San Vito dei Normanni with a rich and uncontamined vegetation of olive grove, almond grove, figs, prickly pears...and red heart. In San Vito dei Normanni there are castles, churches, temples and houses in the historical center. The castle "Dentice di Frasso", recently restored, dates back to medieval times and consists of a square tower of the twelfth century. and a large coutyard overlooking in the 'old residence. Inside are preserved ancient hunting trophies, paintings and the Historical Archive. Among the sacred buildings remind the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, the old parish church until 1595, and the church Santa Maria delle Grazie where there is a series of stone side altars and paintings depicting the Crucifixion, the Virgin Maria and the Pietà, the Church of San Giovanni l' Evangelista with a facade inlocal stone, inside are kept six paintings of considerable merit. Many are also the rock settlements made by Byzantini monks who created a real village. Inside frescoes on the walls that represent Gesù and Maria, characters from Roman times.

 

 Among the popular festivals in the summer on remember

  •  the Festival of San Vito Martire in the second weekend of July with Mass and procession, stalls, fireworks, bands and rides for the young.
  • the festival of Ferragosto where they are exposed and taste the local produce


Typical products..... vegetables

In the tradition of Puglia important is the vegetables cultivation such as “cime di rapa”, artichokes, mushrooms, eggplant, tomatoes, peppers, all products are good and tasty.

“Cime di rapa” prefer hot climates such as ours, to consumed after cooking and very tasty with

a little of piquant.

 

…... And a special recipe “Orecchiette alle cime di rapa”

Clean and wash thoroughly the cime di rapa stems removed and leaves larger. In a pot with boiling and salt water cook the vegetables and half cooked, add the orecchiette. In the same time pour out the olive oil in a pan, fry for 2 minutes the chopped garlic, anchovies, leaves and chilli. Drain vegetables and pasta in the pot, pay the browned onions for a couple of minutes yet. The dish is ready to be served on the table!
